What’s On…

Arts & Crafts

Staying creative in our older years is one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain a happy, healthy and engaged brain. Alongside a number of physical activities, we find offering our residents a creative outlet not only provides them with something to focus on during their days, but something to be proud of at the end of them as well.

Our Arts & Crafts activities are designed to get everyone’s creative juices flowing in a supportive environment, where all levels of ability are welcome. Whether your loved one has never picked up a paint brush before, or whether they’re a modern day Michaelangelo waiting to escape, we’ll help them discover their creative side with a variety of Arts & Crafts activities, such as:

  • Canvas art
  • Card making
  • Clay art
  • Collage
  • Drawing
  • Fabric painting
  • Flower pressing
  • Heart plaques
  • Knitting
  • Painting
  • Painting with straws
  • Painting with string
  • Scrap books
  • Sewing
  • Slate painting
  • Stained glass window painting
  • Stick art
  • Walking frame decorating
  • Wool wrapping

Our experienced activity coordinators work hard to ensure that all our residents can enjoy these creative activities, which means providing them with the right equipment and support where necessary. It’s also a great way for families to get involved when visiting their loved ones, so that they can help them with any difficult tasks and work on a project, together.

All of our homes at MPS Care Group are open to activity suggestions from residents, families and friends. For more information on a particular activity, or to suggest what we should do next, please get in touch directly with one our homes.

Dining Experiences

While our homes at MPS Care Group are always flowing with the smells of great tasting food, we understand that it’s important for people to have the opportunity to make their own food too. Many of our residents were avid bakers and cooks before they started living with us, and we want to ensure that they can still pursue those interests even if they don’t have access to their own kitchen.

For those of us who are more natural eaters than chefs, then don’t worry – there are still plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy food activities here at MPS Care Group. Whether it’s a case of preparing food or simply eating it as a group, we offer a number of exciting activities involving food, such as:

  • Baking
  • BBQs
  • Birthday celebrations
  • Coffee mornings
  • Cooking
  • Picnics
  • Seasonal celebrations

Preparing, eating and enjoying food is just as paramount to our mental wellbeing as it is to our physical state and overall health. Although our partnership with Apetito covers two of those things, giving our residents the tools to safely make food of their own can be a really beneficial outlet for them, as well as a great activity for families to get involved with when visiting their loved ones.

Games

What’s life without a little healthy competition every now and then? At MPS Care Group, we understand that encouraging our residents to take part in a range of fun games can introduce them to new skills and hobbies, while also helping them to build friendships with their new neighbours.

While primarily offering our residents something to focus on and engage with during the day, games can also have a very beneficial impact on our mental wellbeing. They release endorphins and maximise our feelings of satisfaction and success, which is why we seek to keep your loved ones active and competitive with a variety of games, such as:

  • ‘All about me’
  • Balloon darts
  • Bingo
  • Board games
  • Card games
  • Celebration days
  • Dominoes
  • Jigsaws
  • Skittles
  • Smack the rat
  • ‘What’s in the box?’

These games work best when enjoyed as a group. Wherever possible, we strive to ensure that all the games we play can be enjoyed by as many residents as possible. If someone doesn’t know the rules, then our experienced activity coordinators will be more than happy to explain things and help them along, until they become an expert in no time!

Mental Exercise

While it is important to stay physically fit and active in our old age, paying the same level of attention to our mental wellbeing is just as vital. Especially for patients suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, consistent mental exercises can be an extremely effective way of keeping our brains healthy, happy and attentive.

Mental exercises refer to anything which challenges our brains to think outside of the box and work harder than they normally would on an average day. At MPS Care Group, the majority of our activities involve some form of mental exercise, but we also offer some more specific activities geared towards training our brains, such as:

  • Memory sessions
  • Memory walks
  • Pen pals
  • Puzzles
  • Reading
  • Reminiscence
  • Sensory sessions
  • Sign language lessons
  • Quizzes

By actively participating in challenging mental exercises, patients who struggle with remembering particular events or information can take daily steps towards improving their cognitive ability. Not only will this have a significant impact on their mental wellbeing in general, it will also go a long way in helping our carers to provide the exceptional standards of care they set themselves.

Music & Film

One thing which always seems to bring our residents together is a common love for the music and cinema of their childhood. To build on this, and to help our residents to more easily make friends in their new home, we put on a regular schedule of music and film sessions which they can access with ease.

Listening to music and watching films is proven to have an overwhelmingly positive impact on both our happiness and our mental wellbeing. For those who love to listen to music, and equally for those who love to make music of their own, our residents can get involved with a range of Music & Film activities, such as:

  • Karaoke
  • Live entertainment
  • Live music
  • Movie afternoons
  • Sing alongs

Playing music or films from a resident’s past can also have a positive impact on their mental ability and memory retention. The right piece of music or the right film choice at the right time can evoke feelings of comfort and familiarity within your loved ones, which can go a long way in helping them to settle in during their first few weeks with us.

Physical Exercise

Staying physically active in our old age is one of the most effective ways of warding off a long list of physical impairments and illnesses. It can be a difficult task, but with the right level of support and organisation, there’s no reason that your loved ones can’t stay fit and active during their time at MPS Care Group.

By encouraging all of our residents to take part in daily physical activities, we help them feel healthier and stronger at the end of every day. Our residents differ in terms of their individual physical state, but we aim to accommodate all abilities by putting on a range of physical activities, such as:

  • Armchair travelling
  • Armchair exercise
  • Armchair aerobics
  • Dancing
  • Fitness sessions
  • Floor games
  • Movement to music
  • Wii Fit

Our activity coordinators will always be on hand to ensure that your loved ones are participating in any physical exercises in a safe and supervised manner. The aim of each session is to maintain each resident’s fitness levels with a degree of exercise that they feel comfortable with, while also treating them to the endorphins and enjoyment that comes with completing each form of exercise.

Trips Out

While all of our homes are comfortable and beautifully furnished, a change of scenery every now and then can be of real psychological benefit to our residents. Thankfully, with all of our homes situated in great locations throughout the UK, trips out to local amenities or places of interest are never too much effort for our committed activity coordinators.

Organised trips offer an exciting opportunity for our residents to explore somewhere new as part of a group. Whether it’s a short trip into town to do some shopping or a longer journey out to a special landmark, our activity coordinators are here to help your loved ones get out and active with trips out to a bunch of great locations, such as:

  • Beaches
  • Charity events
  • Churches
  • Community groups
  • Fairs
  • Libraries
  • Markets
  • Restaurants
  • Places of worship
  • Garden centres
  • Shopping centres
  • Tea rooms

Building strong relationships with those in our local communities is an important value to all of our homes within the MPS Care Group. By letting our residents explore their local surroundings in a safe and supervised manner, we ensure they feel like valued members of their communities while also giving back to the people who make those communities tick.

Wellbeing

While it’s important to keep our bodies and our brains active as we get older, it’s even more important to give them a break from time to time, and to maintain a healthy balance between taking part in activities and taking the time to rest. With our range of wellbeing activities, our residents can do both, receiving a loving amount of care and attention from the comfort of their own armchairs.

To truly feel comfortable, healthy and happy in their new home, we think it’s important that each resident has the opportunity to pursue a number of calming and therapeutic interests. That’s why, throughout the week, our activity coordinators will organise a range of wellbeing sessions designed to let residents relax and feel better, with activities including:

  • Animal therapy
  • Beauty days
  • Chiropody visits
  • Flower arranging
  • Gardening
  • Hairdresser & salons
  • Hand massage
  • Nail painting
  • Pamper
  • Plant & herb potting

These activities do more than just give our residents a well-deserved break. They encourage us to take the time we need to think and feel better about ourselves, which can have a significant impact on the cognitive ability of all our residents in the long run.

1-1 Sessions

Group activities can be an effective way of making new friends and learning new interests, but we understand that not all of our residents are comfortable with doing things as a group. Whether it’s due to issues of anxiety or physical ability, we strive to make those residents who can’t get involved in group activities feel included by carrying them out as 1-1 sessions.

The majority of activities which take place at MPS Care Group can be carried out as part of a 1-1 session between your loved one and a dedicated member of our staff. This includes games, physical and mental exercises, wellbeing sessions and even trips out.

By delivering these activity sessions in a 1-1 format that they feel comfortable with, our goal is to ensure all of our residents are experiencing the activity levels and new experiences that we know lead to a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

The ultimate aim of all our 1-1 sessions is to make each resident feel comfortable taking part in new activities and, if possible, to encourage them to continue those hobbies as part of a wider group of residents at some point in the future.
